The Twin Peaks Mythos
An Inquiry in the Form of a View-Along
Phil Ford and J.F. Martel
Starts June 8 at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET
Starting June 8th, Phil Ford and J.F. Martel, co-hosts of the Weird Studies Podcast, will lead a four-week “view-along” of select material from David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks saga.
Each week, participants will meet online to watch an episode with the hosts, whose dialogue will serve as a real-time commentary on what is unfolding on the screen. Think of those great director’s commentaries of the DVD era, but in the style of a Weird Studies episode.
A Twin Peaks Mythos?
The goal is to start thinking of the world of Twin Peaks as a “mythos” that transcends its source, much like Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos—or even the Star Wars universe—long ago transcended its original fictional milieu to become hermeneutic devices for interacting with reality. What does Twin Peaks reveal to us about the world? Is Twin Peaks a mere fiction or a hyperstition? This series of view-alongs will begin to sketch out answers to these and other questions.

Viewings
Participants are responsible for getting access to the episodes prior to each session. Sessions will be timed so that everyone starts watching together. The four viewings are the following:
Season 1, episode 2, “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer”
Season 2, episode 22, “Beyond Life and Death”
Fire Walk With Me, “Dear Meadow Prologue” (first 30 minutes of the film)
Season 3, episode 8, “The Return: Part 8”
A class discussion will follow each viewing. Discussion will center on the episode we just watched, the Twin Peaks mythos in general, and any readings assigned for that week.
We hope you’ll join us as we explore the weird universe of Twin Peaks.
